New Jersey’s system ties the forfeiture period and IID duration to your BAC at the time of driving:
- BAC 0.08–0.09%: Your license is forfeited only until you install the IID — install it immediately after conviction and your forfeiture period is essentially zero. Then carry the IID for 3 months.
- BAC 0.10–0.14%: Same as above — forfeiture ends when you install. Then carry the IID for 7 to 12 months.
- BAC 0.15%+: A 3-month hard forfeiture applies before you can install any IID. The IID period (12–15 months) begins running during this forfeiture and continues after restoration. So for a 0.15%+ driver, the IID period starts at conviction, and you’re effectively carrying the device for the full 12–15 months whether or not you’re driving during the forfeiture.
- Refusal: Forfeiture until IID installed, then 9–15 months. Install promptly to cut the forfeiture period short.
BAC under 0.15%? Install immediately to end your forfeiture. For first offenses at BAC 0.08–0.14%, New Jersey forfeits your license until you install the IID — not for a fixed period. How to get installed — 5 steps

- Contact an MVC-approved vendor, confirm their current approval, and schedule installation. For BAC 0.15%+, you must wait out the 3-month hard forfeiture first.
- Bring your vehicle and conviction paperwork to the installation appointment. MVC notes the IID on your license record.
- Keep every maintenance appointment. Keep a clean record in the final 30 days before you plan to request removal — any violations there extend your term up to 90 days.
- At term end: your vendor certifies the final 30-day compliance to MVC; MVC clears the removal. MVC then removes the IID notation from your license.
