Missouri Ignition Interlock Requirements (2026): Costs & Approved Providers

Missouri’s ignition interlock system gives first-time DWI drivers a meaningful choice: install an IID immediately and drive from day one, or wait out a 30-day hard suspension first. For repeat offenders, the IID — now required to include a camera — is mandatory at reinstatement. Here’s how both paths work, which three providers are MoDOT-certified, and what violations cost you.

The first-offense choice: IID immediately or 30-day wait

Missouri gives first-time DWI drivers (and first-offense BAC cases) a clear trade-off on their 90-day suspension period:

  • Option A — IID from day one: Install a MoDOT-certified IID immediately → DOR issues a 90-day Restricted Driving Privilege. You drive from the first day of your suspension period, with no hard suspension at all.
  • Option B — No IID: Serve 30 days of hard suspension (no driving), then receive a 60-day RDP without a device. You can’t drive for a month but don’t have device costs.

For anyone who needs to commute to work, take children to school, or fulfill any regular obligation, Option A is almost always the better choice. The device costs less than a month of lost wages for most workers.

Repeat offenders: camera-equipped IID required. Missouri doesn’t just require an IID for repeat DWI offenders — it requires a camera-equipped IID (7 CSR 60-2). The camera records the driver at startup and rolling retests. Not all provider models meet this requirement. When contacting a provider as a repeat offender, specifically confirm that their Missouri-certified device includes a camera before booking.
No state indigent IID program in Missouri. We found no state-funded IID cost-assistance program on dor.mo.gov or modot.org. SATOP (the Substance Awareness Traffic Offender Program) has a sliding-scale fee for its own services — but that does not cover IID costs. All IID installation and monitoring costs are paid out of pocket. Ask providers about payment plans if cost is a barrier.

Missouri MoDOT-certified providers

Three major national providers are on Missouri’s MoDOT-certified list. Guardian, Dräger/RoadGuard, and ALCOLOCK are not certified in Missouri.

How to get installed — 5 steps

  1. After your DWI suspension notice, decide between Option A (IID immediately, drive throughout) and Option B (30-day hard suspension, then 60-day RDP without IID). For most working drivers, Option A is the better choice.
  2. If choosing Option A: contact a MoDOT-certified provider immediately and arrange installation. Repeat offenders: specifically confirm the device includes a camera before booking.
  3. Bring your suspension paperwork and vehicle. Installation takes 60–90 minutes. DOR will issue your RDP once they confirm the IID installation.
  4. Keep every monthly maintenance appointment — missing maintenance terminates your LDP/RDP. Keep a clean record, especially in the final 3 months of any reinstatement IID period.
  5. At term end: do not remove until DOR confirms eligibility. Your manufacturer notifies DOR electronically on completion. Pay the $45 reinstatement fee and complete SATOP if required.

Violations and the 3-month clean window

Missouri handles violations differently depending on where you are in your IID period:

  • During the 90-day first-offense RDP: Each violation adds 30 days to the RDP term.
  • During the final 3 months of a reinstatement IID period: Any violation extends the term until 3 consecutive violation-free months are completed — the 3-month window restarts from zero.
  • Missing monthly maintenance: Terminates your LDP/RDP or re-suspends your driving privileges outright — a $20 DOR re-suspension fee applies.

The 3-month clean-window mechanic for reinstatement IID cases means a violation near the very end of your term doesn’t just add days — it resets the entire 3-month clock. Keep especially clean compliance in the home stretch.

Missouri requires SR-22 insurance for 2 years — shorter than most states, and the clock starts at the suspension start date. See Missouri SR-22 costs and cheapest carriers →

Missouri DWI interlock FAQ

Can I drive from day one after a DWI in Missouri?
Yes — if you install a MoDOT-certified IID immediately. Missouri gives first-time DWI drivers a choice: install an IID and receive an immediate 90-day RDP (drive from day one), or serve 30 days of hard suspension followed by a 60-day RDP without a device. For most drivers with work and family obligations, the IID path is clearly better.
Do repeat offenders need a camera on the interlock in Missouri?
Yes — Missouri requires camera-equipped IID for all repeat-offender reinstatement cases under 7 CSR 60-2. The camera records the driver at startup and rolling retests. Before booking installation as a repeat offender, specifically confirm that the provider’s Missouri-certified device model includes a camera.
How long is the IID requirement for repeat offenders?
Not less than 6 months of camera-equipped IID from the date of reinstatement, regardless of whether it’s a second or third conviction. The license denial periods are long (5 years for a second conviction within 5 years; 10 years for a third+) — the 6-month minimum starts only after DOR reinstates your license following that denial period.
Is there financial assistance for low-income drivers in Missouri?
No state IID cost-assistance program was found on dor.mo.gov or modot.org. SATOP has a sliding-scale fee for its own substance-awareness program — but that does not cover IID installation or monitoring costs. All IID costs are out of pocket. Ask providers about payment plans.
What happens if I miss a maintenance appointment in Missouri?
Missing your monthly maintenance appointment terminates your Limited Driving Privilege or re-suspends your driving privileges. DOR charges a $20 re-suspension fee. This is separate from the violation consequences for failed tests — missing service is treated as a compliance failure that can end your driving privileges immediately.
