Nebraska Ignition Interlock Permit (IIP) Requirements (2026): Costs & Approved Providers
Nebraska requires an ignition interlock for every DUI conviction if you want to drive during your revocation — the Ignition Interlock Permit (IIP) is the only path to driving during that period. Driving during revocation without a permit is a Class IV felony. Indigent drivers may qualify for the state’s Interlock Fund. Here’s how the IIP system works and what it costs.
| Offense term | DUI (Driving Under the Influence) — Nebraska’s term |
| All-offender? | Effectively yes to drive — the IIP + IID is required for any DUI conviction to drive during revocation (60-6,197.03) |
| 1st offense — standard BAC (.08–.14) | 6-month revocation; IIP + IID required to drive during it; ALR attaches 15 days after arrest (IIP available immediately for test failures) |
| 1st offense — BAC .15+ | 1-year revocation; IIP + IID required to drive during it |
| 2nd offense | 18-month revocation; 45-day hard no-drive period; IIP + IID for at least 1 year after the 45 days |
| 3rd+ offense | 18 months to 15 years revocation; 45-day hard no-drive period; IIP + IID for not less than 1 year |
| Reinstatement after IIP | Pay $125 reinstatement fee + maintain SR-22; retake written, vision, and drive tests for a new license |
| Driving without IIP during revocation | Class IV felony with 15-year revocation (Neb. Rev. Stat. 60-4,118.06) |
| Tampering / bypassing | Revokes the IIP; ~6-month extension of revocation (250 Neb. Admin. Code ch. 1 s.008) |
| Indigent Interlock Fund | DMV may pay install, removal, and up to 12 months of monitoring if funds are available (60-6,211.05) — subject to fund availability |
| DMV fees | IIP: $50 (replacement: $16); reinstatement: $125 (+ $50 additional if SR-22 lapses) |
| SR-22 required? | Yes — required for court-ordered DUI revocations and to hold an IIP; 3 years from reinstatement-eligibility date |
| Who administers | Nebraska DMV — Financial Responsibility / IIP |
| Governing law | Neb. Rev. Stat. 60-6,196; 60-6,197.03; 60-4,118.06; 60-6,211.05 |
How Nebraska’s IIP system works
After a DUI conviction, Nebraska revokes your license for a period depending on your offense level and BAC. During that revocation, the Ignition Interlock Permit (IIP) is the only way to drive legally. The IIP is issued by Nebraska DMV; the IID must be installed in every vehicle you operate.
For a first offense, you can apply for the IIP immediately after the administrative license revocation (ALR) attaches — 15 days after arrest for a test failure. For second and subsequent offenses, there is a mandatory 45-day hard no-drive period before an IIP can be issued.
At the end of your IIP period, reinstatement is not automatic. You must pay the $125 reinstatement fee, maintain SR-22 coverage, and retake the written, vision, and driving tests for a new license. Plan ahead for this — the process takes time.

How to get your IIP and install — 5 steps
- After your DUI arrest or conviction, apply to Nebraska DMV for your Ignition Interlock Permit. If applying for the Indigent Fund, submit your notarized affidavit with income and benefit documentation at this step — don’t wait.
- Contact a DMV-approved provider, confirm current approval status, and schedule installation. You must install an approved device in every vehicle you plan to operate.
- Bring your IIP, DMV paperwork, and all vehicles to the installation appointment. Pay the $50 IIP fee to DMV.
- For 2nd+ offenders: serve the full 45-day hard no-drive period before the IIP can be issued. Use that time to arrange provider and Indigent Fund documentation.
- At the end of your IIP period: pay the $125 reinstatement fee, file/maintain your SR-22, and retake written, vision, and driving tests to receive a new license. Do not remove the device until DMV confirms your eligibility.
