New Jersey Ignition Interlock Requirements (2026): Costs & Approved Vendors
New Jersey requires an ignition interlock for every DWI conviction including a first offense at 0.08% — but your BAC determines both how long you lose your license before reinstalling and how long you carry the device after. At 0.15%+, you face a 3-month forfeiture before getting back behind the wheel. Here’s how New Jersey’s tiered system works and what to expect.
| Offense term | DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) — New Jersey’s term |
| All-offender? | Yes — every DWI conviction including a first offense at BAC 0.08% (N.J.S.A. 39:4-50.17) |
| 1st offense — BAC 0.08–<0.10 | License forfeited until IID installed; IID for 3 months after restoration |
| 1st offense — BAC 0.10–<0.15 | License forfeited until IID installed; IID for 7–12 months after restoration |
| 1st offense — BAC 0.15+ | 3-month license forfeiture before IID; then IID for 12–15 months (IID period runs during the forfeiture and continues after restoration) |
| 1st offense — refusal | License forfeited until IID installed; IID for 9–15 months after restoration |
| 2nd offense | 1–2 year license forfeiture; IID during forfeiture and 2–4 years after restoration |
| 3rd+ offense | 8-year forfeiture; IID during forfeiture and 2–4 years after restoration |
| BAC 0.08–<0.15, 1st offense | License forfeiture ends as soon as IID is installed — install quickly to resume driving |
| Removal requirement | Final 30 days: no more than one failed test at 0.08%+ (unless retest within 5 min was lower) + all maintenance met; vendor certifies to MVC; MVC clears removal (39:4-50.18) |
| Violation — final 30 days | Reported to MVC/court; may extend up to 90 days |
| Failure to install | +1-year additional suspension; driving non-equipped vehicle = same |
| Tampering | Disorderly persons offense (criminal) |
| No indigent program | No state IID cost relief found in N.J.S.A. 39:4-50.17 or MVC materials |
| MVC fees | $100 restoration + DWI surcharge $1,000/yr × 3 yrs ($3,000 total, 1st/2nd offense); IDRC $100 + $264–321 curriculum |
| SR-22 required? | No — NJ does not use SR-22 or FR-44; NJ uses its own MVC DWI surcharge system |
| Who approves vendors | NJ MVC — nj.gov/mvc/license/interlock-manufacturers.htm |
| Governing law | N.J.S.A. 39:4-50; 39:4-50.17; 39:4-50.18; 39:4-50.4a |
How your BAC affects your timeline
New Jersey’s system ties the forfeiture period and IID duration to your BAC at the time of driving:
- BAC 0.08–0.09%: Your license is forfeited only until you install the IID — install it immediately after conviction and your forfeiture period is essentially zero. Then carry the IID for 3 months.
- BAC 0.10–0.14%: Same as above — forfeiture ends when you install. Then carry the IID for 7 to 12 months.
- BAC 0.15%+: A 3-month hard forfeiture applies before you can install any IID. The IID period (12–15 months) begins running during this forfeiture and continues after restoration. So for a 0.15%+ driver, the IID period starts at conviction, and you’re effectively carrying the device for the full 12–15 months whether or not you’re driving during the forfeiture.
- Refusal: Forfeiture until IID installed, then 9–15 months. Install promptly to cut the forfeiture period short.

What an interlock costs in New Jersey
| Installation (one time) | $70–150 |
| Monthly lease + monitoring | $60–100 |
| Removal | $50–75 |
| MVC restoration fee | $100 |
| DWI surcharge (1st/2nd offense) | $1,000/yr × 3 yrs = $3,000 total |
| DWI surcharge (3rd offense within 3 yrs) | $1,500/yr × 3 yrs = $4,500 total |
| IDRC assessment + curriculum | $100 + $264–321 |
Over a 3-month first-offense IID term (BAC 0.08–0.09%), device costs are roughly $350–500. The MVC surcharges ($3,000 over 3 years) dwarf the device cost for most drivers. Estimate your device cost →
How to get installed — 5 steps
- After your DWI conviction, determine your BAC tier — it sets both your forfeiture structure and IID duration. If your BAC was under 0.15%, install as quickly as possible to end your license forfeiture immediately.
- Contact an MVC-approved vendor, confirm their current approval, and schedule installation. For BAC 0.15%+, you must wait out the 3-month hard forfeiture first.
- Bring your vehicle and conviction paperwork to the installation appointment. MVC notes the IID on your license record.
- Keep every maintenance appointment. Keep a clean record in the final 30 days before you plan to request removal — any violations there extend your term up to 90 days.
- At term end: your vendor certifies the final 30-day compliance to MVC; MVC clears the removal. MVC then removes the IID notation from your license.
